Rutilated quartz is clear quartz filled with fine needles of rutile, a natural form of titanium dioxide. The needles are usually golden, and sometimes silver, copper red or black, so no two stones are ever alike.
Its old name is the Venus Hair Stone. Legend has it that the goddess Venus lost a lock of her golden hair while bathing, and when the water froze, her hair was held forever inside the crystal.
